Capsule size chart fill weight and capacity comparison

We get a lot of questions asking “what are the different capsule sizes?”, “how much powder does a certain size capsule hold and which one would I need to fill a certain amount of powder?” “what are capsule sizes?”, So here is capsule sizes explained in a simple guide and gelatin vegetarian capsule size chart.

What Capsule Size Is Right For You?

Because of all these different capsule sizes, we supply it might be hard to figure out which size is right for your needs.

We have provided a more detailed infographic chart on the specifications on the different capsules we carry for both gelatin and vegetable.

For most applications, a size 00 or size 0 will be sufficient and are often classed as standard capsule sizes.. They are the most common sizes used by all because a size 0 holds about 500mg or 0.5 grams of powder while a size 00 holds about 735 mg or 0.735 grams.

Large Capsule

Size 000 is the largest capsule size for human use, on average this holds about 1000mg, but that all depends on powder density. Because of this, it is best to check the powder you wish to fill mesh size and density. please check the capsule size chart below for more details

Average Size Capsules

00 capsule capacity holds about 750mg, because of the size and great fill weight it is one of the most common capsule sizes used in the supplement industry, the volume of the capsule is 0.93ml and capsule size 00 is 23.6mm big locked.

how much does a size 0 capsule hold? about 500mg, because of the great average dose size, it is one of the most common capsule sizes used in the pharmaceutical and beauty industry. the volume of the capsule is 0.68ml and capsule size 0 is 21.3mm locked length.

Capsule Size 0 vs 00? when considering which capsule to use, we would need to know what fill weight we want to achieve, and if we want to use any bulking agents, what capsule machine would be in use.

Small capsules

Size 1 holds about 400mg. and is a great size for those who have trouble with swallowing capsules but with only a 0.50ml volume fill density is not the best for consumers wanting high dosage.

Size 2 holds about 300mg. and again is a great size to use if you have trouble swallowing capsules,

because of the small size capsule makes this really hard to fill with powder and tricky to use. Because of this, makes it not a popular buying choice for consumers but one of the cheapest due to lower material costs.

Capsule Size and fill weight

The fill weight depends on the powder density and particle size. Some powders can be much denser than others. But it also depends on how fine the powder is. Because of this, a good way to check is to know the powders mesh size.

  1. I only need to put roughly 3 mg inside of a capsule, would a size 2 be my best bet ? It’s a time amount.

      1. What kind of “powder”….? The type of powder will determine the weight…
Tablespoons is a measurement of volume, while mg and g are measures of weight…
A Tablespoon can vary in it’s weight from around 8g to 15g…
So, 2 Tablespoons can vary from 16g to 30g, depending on what the substance is…

Generally speaking, there isn’t a capsule anywhere that can be filled with that amount of powder, nor would you be able to swallow it if there was… it will take multiple capsules, and a considerable amount of them at that, to be equal to that amount of powder.

        Consider this –
If a “0” capsule will hold 500mg, then it will take 2 “0” capsules to equal 1g,
So, to get 16g of whatever it is you’re taking (to equal 2 Tablespoons), you would need 32 “0” capsules.
To get 30g of whatever it is you’re taking (to equal 2 Tablespoons), you would need 60 “0” capsules.

That’s a substantial number of capsules in either case, and not a number most people would consider taking.
In Tablespoon levels, items are usually dissolved in liquid such as water or juices, as this not only allows them to be swallowed easily, but also hides their taste to some degree.

In any case, in order to know the number of capsules such a large quantity would require, you would first have to find out the weight of the powder in mg or g per tablespoon, and go from there…

  2. So if, for example, I wanted to put 1000mg ascorbic acid powder in a capsule, would size #000 be best, or would I be better splitting into two #0 capsules? You refer to mesh size of a powder – what is mesh size and how do you calculate it if you don’t know it? Thanks

  3. Could you please tell me what size capsule I would need for 1gm resveratrol and 1mg NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide)?

  9. Rina Chaya Lebovic

I have Mentabiotics powder from Amare Global that I need to encapsulate for Passover consumption. One dose is a scoop, which is 7 g. So would I need 7 #000 capsules full to get the full dose?
I don’t know what mesh size is, nor the powder density.
    Thank you!

  10. I am so confused about what size capsules to use with this formulation for 100 capsules

I am needing to make 100 capsules that are 4.5mg each of naltrexone.
    The formula is as follows:
    naltrexone Hcl (450mg)

this will yield 100 capsules but I have no idea about what capsule size to use. 00? 0? please help.

  11. Hello,
i have a powder that is 95% pass at 80 mesh. I want to pack the powder into capsules into 500mg. What size capsule would be best for this powder. Would really appreciate the help.

  12. Im still not sure…. right now i have to use four #4 capsules with tinture twice a day. I want to cut the quanity. i did get some #000 but they are huge!!! I think too big.

  13. Hi I want to make my own Metamucil capsules from the Metamucil powder sold at Costco. What size of capsules do I need to replicate the capsules that they sell. Dollar and convenience wise the powder would go much further than the 300 capsules that they sell.
Has anyone tried capsulating the Metamucil powder?

  14. I need crush a 100mg tablet of Teva Trazodone (for my dog) and fit it into a capsule as that is the only way I can get him to take pills. What size of Capsule would I need for this, 2 or 3? Thanks you in advance for your response.

  15. Hello, I have 500 mg Niacinamide vitamins and need to take 3 grams per day. How many capsules a day is that with a weight of 142?

  16. Hello… I need to give my dog .7 mils of a liquid medication. What size capsule would I need? I’ve been looking everywhere to try and find this out and having problems. I would really appreciate the help. Thank you Rick

  17. My vet prescribed 60mg compounded capsules of Sildenafil for my Westie (she is dying of Pulmonary Fibrosis). It turned out to be a little too much for her but, I have 120 capsules. I would like to be able to split each capsule into two and instead of giving her one capsule every 2 hours, give her the 1/2 dose capsules every 8 hours. The vet indicated this would be a good solution. I just don’t know how to measure how much to put in each new capsule or how big a capsule I will need. They are small capsules already. So, here are my four questions:
#1. How can I determine what size the current capsules are and what size the new ones need to be?
#2. How do I measure how much powder is in each current capsule?
#3. How do I measure the correct amount of powder needed for each new capsule?
#4. Do you have the necessary equipment I need to complete this task?

  18. One of the medications that I take comes in pill form and the dosage requires me to cut the pill in half. This results in sharp edges on the cut pill that sometimes makes it difficult to swallow the medication. I was thinking that if I put the half pill in a capsule it would be easier to swallow. The cut pill size is 9mm x 5mm x 5mm. What size capsule would be capable of holding the cut pill?
